«Governing the Italians is not difficult; it’s useless.»

This made-up quote has been falsely attributed to various historical figures: the fascist dictator Mussolini, the politician Giovanni Giolitti, and even Winston Churchill.

But the phrase contains an element of truth, as it’ll be apparent the moment you arrive in Italy’s capital.

Rome isn’t a well-run city.

It’s way dirtier and scruffier than a big European capital city has any right to be.

Especially one that charges every visitor who stays overnight 7.50€ of city tax per day.

The traffic (and the noise and pollution it generates) is atrocious, to the point that, at times, it made even a lifelong gearhead like me wish cars were never invented.
